Before Boracay , there was Sicogon

Sicogon is an island in Northern Iloilo, under the municipality of Carles. It is named after cogon or kogon, a type of grass that is abundant in the island.

Long time ago, Sicogon was the best beach destination in the whole of Panay island before Boracay became popular. It was a famed tourist destination during the 70's due to its clear blue waters and long stretch of fine white sand and line of coconut palms. However, at the end of Martial Law regime, Sicogon's popularity waned in favor of Boracay and eventually went into neglect and forgotten.

But now, after being featured in various media flatforms, Sicogon is making a comeback as a world class tourist destination.

At present, there are no luxurious accommodations in the island. Instead simple nipa huts and tents are available for day trips as well as overnight stay.

Visitors may bring their own food as local stores offer only limited goods. Or opt to buy freshly caught seafood from fishermen and let the locals cook it for them.

Buaya beach is the best part of the island for swimming. Visitors can also do island hopping , snorkeling and diving. Some of the places we hopped are Tumaquin Island and Gasang Beach. Trekkers can hike the highest peak in the island, Mt. Opao.

Sicogon still has that natural beauty waiting to be discovered by visitors. It is gradually regaining its former glory through the efforts of local tourism. And it's worth it.
