Discover Dumaguete

Dumaguete : duma get me

Dumaguete is the capital city in Negros Oriental.  It is one of the vibrant cities I have been travelling every now and then as part of my work assignment.

Often called as The City of Gentle People, it is also known as a University City because of popular universities and colleges where students of sorrounding provinces and cities of Visayas as well as Mindanao enroll for tertiary education.

It is also listed as 5th in the 7 Best Places to Retire around the World in Forbes Magazine.

But what makes Dumaguete such a charming city?

The reason lies on several factors which in my opinion are what that attracts these local and foreign tourists to come to this relaxing city.

Dumaguete is a relatively small city. Meaning, it's easy to go around and find everything you need. As a frequent traveller, finding a guest house or inn isn't an ardous task because all of them are in close proximity. And the room rates are  reasonable with good service. Banks, restaurants, coffee shops, convenience stores and shopping malls are all just within walking distance. And for those who intend to relax and unwind, beach resorts are just nearby.

Then you can go around the city at a tricycle fare of only ten pesos.  Living here is inexpensive.

It has plenty of fresh fish and other seafoods, as well as fruits and vegetables.  You're on a healthy lifestyle if you choose to live here.

Dumaguete has a natural beauty. For instance, century old trees line up at Rizal Boulevard. And since it is facing the sea, you will enjoy taking a relaxing stroll here and sit while watching the sunrise or cool in the sea breeze in the afternoon. A lot of people go here to exercise morning or afternoon.  Then you may want to dine at its several local restaurants at the other side of the street when the night time comes.

Aside from these restaurants, there are also a number of bars and clubs but mind you, Dumaguete is not the typical party place city as you would expect. It is generally quiet at night.

It is generally clean and safe. I've spent a few night outs here and I could walk back to my hotel without any problem. But of course, with caution as anywhere else in the country.

People here are generally friendly, dont rush, even on occassional traffic jams they don't get furious. They are what others would say chill people. No wonder, the slow pace of life here is what makes  Dumaguete to be called  City of Gentle People as I have understood.

Because inspite of modern development, Dumaguete still has that laidback charm.  Just relax and enjoy life. Chill.

And if you happened to be a visitor here, dont forget to bring back home some souvenirs or pasalubong like the Sans Rival or Silvanas. I have tasted them and its so sweet.

Dumaguete City is a 5 to 6 hours travel by land from Bacolod City.
It is accessible also by sea and air travel.
