Lakawon Island Escapade

Lakawon Island in Cadiz City is considered as the Ultimate Escapade in Negros Occidental.

I first heard about this island from one of my first friends in Bacolod City who hails from Cadiz City some time in 2007. At that time, Lakawon Island was only known to locals who would want to have an unspoiled beach getaway.  There were no amenities yet. Just small huts for visitors and  a number of houses of residents there. Thus, you have to bring along with you your own food and drinks. There were small sari-sari stores in the island anyway. After a  decade, I finally took the shot to visit this now famed island. The recent pictures of the beach that I have seen in the internet have caught my interest.

Lakawon is a banana shaped island off the coast of Cadiz City in Negros Occidental. It can be reached by land travel from Bacolod City at approximately 1. 5 hours directly to the port of Cadiz Viejo. Then a 20-minute boat ride going to the island.

For those who have known Lakawon Island long before its recent development, they would usually say that this resort was an alternative for the locals who don't have the budget to go to the  prestigious tourists destinations in the country like Boracay or El Nido.

True, this island boasts of white sand beach consisting of  powdered corals and seashells. The lovely beach has a lot of coconut trees. Naturally relaxing, this is the best place for those who would want to unwind due to its accessibility and affordability.

However, the resort have now undergone developments and so the prices obviously go with it as well.

I was  fortunate that the rates were still affordable to my wallet when we went there. Right after the closure of Boracay for rehabilitation in 2018, the prices rose up.

Lakawon Island was one of the province's best kept secrets until recently when the influx of many tourists have turned this once infamous place  into a fast emerging premier tourist destination in the country. Thanks to its effective marketing campaign.

The resort now offers activities like kayak, bandwagon, banana boat, paddle board and others.

It has a floating bar.

Beanbags are scattered on the beach. On a hot summer day when the sun is high up at noon you would not want to sit on the sand because its literally hot. These beanbags offer the comforts.

There are spots that are perfect for your instagram photos.

Comfortable native cottages are available for those who would want to stay overnight. Of course, we stayed for a night to satisfy our vacation.

You can still bring your own food and drinks but you have to pay a corkage at a minimal fee per head.  On the other hand, you can dine at the resort's restaurant. The foods are delectable. Yet if you want to save on a budget you may opt to bring your own.

Truly, the island of Negros has a lot of natural wonders. As you  travel the entire island, you will find a lot more just waiting to be discovered. And Lakawon Island is definitely one of them.
